Updates on Crandel Cove & Discovery Village
SACReD has filed a written complaint to cause a public meeting for a proposed new housing development at the location of one of our old victories. A developer had scheduled a pre-submission meeting to be “Zoom only” until Phil Lecroy prevailed to have an in-person meeting. However, the current law is that they are not even required to post a sign on the land of the upcoming meeting two weeks in advance. So we posted it for them! We have a long history of saving this particular parcel from inappropriate development, previously called Crandel Cove.
Crandel Cove is at the entrance to Franklin Manor and is an undeveloped wetland and forest on Deep Cove Creek. SACReD has spent years protecting both sides of this creek, including this very parcel of land. A developer is now proposing homes on previously designated wetlands. Through SACReD’s efforts, much of this land was previously protected in the land deed, but that has been removed! Now, a new proposal has morphed into a proposed development we refer to as “Developers Way”. SACReD’s volunteer lawyers, past and present, are helping us understand this current proposal in preparation for this public meeting on Wednesday evening at the Deale Library at 6 pm. Please consider attending.
Here is the latest news on Discovery Village, on our interests and actions. Our leadership continues to try to understand the intentions of current ownership and shape the future of Discovery Village to meet the needs of our local community. It is now in the hands of the largest developers in Anne Arundel County. It did not have to be this way, but there is no time to look back now. We have been meeting with investors, community leaders, and elected officials to try to find a solution for ownership and operation that will meet the needs of the community. Our next meeting is with Anne Arundel Community College leadership to share the concept of mutual opportunities for all.
